The Story

Jimmie Barlow's life is in jeopardy, for a reason he can't easily explain. He's become the unwilling star of an online game that has gone terribly, terribly wrong.

When a San Francisco billionaire's son is found viciously shot to death on his father's yacht, there appears to be no motive. That's until Jimmie's prep school classmates point their fingers at "charity kid" Jimmie Barlow. Jimmie's an oddball, an outsider who fits the classic profile of a teen-age killer. Soon Jimmie is under mounting pressure from the police and the media.

As if that weren't enough, Jimmie's fallen head over heels for another game player. She's beautiful, she's the girl of his dreams. But is she so determined to win the game they've all been playing...she'll kill Jimmie to do it?

"A Mug's Game" is a mystery/thriller. It is suitable for adults, teens and anyone who likes to be surprised at every turn.

Why I Wrote It

In "A Mug's Game," I set out to create a teenage protagonist who is strong, yet vulnerable and funny. Someone who didn't try to mold himself into the image society creates. A boy who didn't follow the stereotypes.

Jimmie's white, he's intelligent, he's an outsider and his life seems to revolve around complex hacking schemes and violent video games. But Jimmie is no passive spectator, he's involved in the world. He listens, he's aware and he battles the lure of violence with all the strength he has.

"Why kids kill," is something we've been forced to think about--due to the horrifying increase of school shootings, teen suicide and self-injurious behavior. But we can't risk falling for simple answers and stereotypes and not giving the struggles real teens face enough credit or air time in our books.

"A Mug's Game" is my way of maybe, just maybe, shedding a ray of light on a very dark spot in this world. We can't be blind to the possibility of violence in everyone. But if we fall for a false profile that drives us further and further away from the truth--we may lose sight of the true warning signs, and that would also be tragic.
