BRAD PITT LIGHT ORCHESTRA
PRESENTED BY TOM MILLETT
BROUGHT TO YOU FROM THE MORGAN HOTEL IN TEMPLE BAR
Hailing from the west of Ireland, The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra has its origins as a group of college friends drawn together from the intertwining worlds of music, theatre, family.... and IT. After parting ways due to emigration and the like, The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra (BPLO) reformed when two members - Ann and David Blake - featured on The Ray D'Arcy Show's album 'Even Better Than The Real Thing Volume 2' with a haunting version of Hole in The Head by The Sugababes. The BPLO went on to produce two successful EPs, 'Fireside Chat' and 'Small Contradictions'.

With an ever-increasing fan base, the BPLO first caught the attention of both Paul McLoone and Alison Curtis of Today FM with their joyful winter single December. Since then, they have recorded two sessions for The McLoone Show while also enjoying strong airplay on other national radio shows - including those of Ryan Tubridy , Ray D'Arcy, Alison Curtis, Jenny Huston, Tom Dunne, Dave Couse, Dan Hegarty and on many Independent local radio stations as well as on BBC Northern Ireland. The BPLO released their eagerly awaited debut LP 'Lowering the Tone' on August 27 2010.

While the three lead vocalists- Blake siblings Ann, David and James- conjure distinct moods, it is the close sibling harmonies that sit at the heart of the BPLO's sound. Built around that glow is the formidable melodic instrumentation of the group and an irrepressible theatricality. The BPLO's music evokes the grandeur of Arcade Fire, the warmth of Crosby Stills & Nash, the wistfulness of Belle & Sebastian, the melodic sensibility of the Divine Comedy and a whiff of a Tom Waits carnival. Arresting musicality coupled with a dark, wry wit, they produce an unmissable vibrant, life-affirming, live experience. Regular performers at Irish festivals like the Electric Picnic and Flatlake, the BPLO comfortably traverse the literary, theatrical and music worlds.

Ann Blake- Vocals
David Blake- Vocals, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar
James Blake- Vocals, Acoustic Guitar
Stephen Childs- Violin, Viola
Tom Howley- Keyboards
Brian O'Grady- Double Bass, Electric Bass
Jamie O'Neill- Percussion, Mandolin
Nick Carswell- Acoustic Guitar, Vocals, Clarinet, Fisher Price items
Boris Hunka and Diane Daly- Vibes and Violin respectively

The BPLO's influences include Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Goran Bregovic, Keith Jarrett, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, John Banville, John McGahern, Neil Hannon, Tom Zé, Elvis Costello, Paul Durcan, The Frames, The Strokes and Sufjan Stevens. This list of fine artists from varying talent streams may offer an explanation, for some, for the eclectic style of music produced by The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra.

FILMED DURING CANADIAN MUSIC FEST 2011

BALCONYTV TORONTO IS BROUGHT TO YOU IN ASSOCIATION WITH INDIE WEEK AND THE UNDERGROUND GARAGE
PRESENTED BY NOEL COPEMAN
http://www.undergroundgarage.ca
http://www.indieweek.com

Over 7 years and 4 albums, Montreal band the High Dials have turned out a varied repertoire of anthemic pop, upbeat psych and melancholic folk-rock balladry. They've won high marks for their live performances from Brooklyn Vegan, Spin, Magnet and the New York Post, who declared them "a must-see band".

The High Dials debuted on NYC-based Rainbow Quartz Records in 2003 with "A New Devotion", a mishmash of retro-freakbeat sounds and shimmering pop with a hidden lyrical storyline. The album made a fan of Little Steven Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen fame who played them heavily on his syndicated radio show and slotted them in with the Strokes, the Stooges, New York Dolls and other music legends at his Underground Garage Festival in 2004.

"War of the Wakening Phantoms" (2005) was their follow-up album. Produced by Joseph Donovan (the Dears, Sam Roberts) and mixed in LA by Dave Bianco (Tom Petty, Frank Black, Teenage Fanclub), it won widespread rave reviews from such influential publications as NME, Spin and the Washington Post. The album went to number one on Canadian college radio charts and the High Dials supported the release as tour partners for both Brian Jonestown Massacre and Neko Case, criss-crossing North America and the UK over many months.

In 2007, the band released "The Holy Ground EP", which featured a collaboration with Rod Argent, legendary songwriter of High Dials' heroes The Zombies! That same year, they enjoyed sudden mainstream exposure when their song "The Holy Ground" featured in a prominent ad campaign for Rogers mobile in Canada.

In 2008, the High Dials' released their third LP "Moon Country" (Fontana North/Universal, 2008). Begun in a remote stone cottage in Ireland, the eclectic, sprawling double album showcased everything from droning dance grooves and spaced-out rock to wistful cosmic folk. They returned to the road in support of the record, a cycle that peaked with a memorable opening slot for Echo & the Bunnymen at SXSW 2009.

In 2010, they reunited with Rainbow Quartz, and set about building a home studio in an abandoned (reputedly haunted) Montreal building that once belonged to the Canadian navy. The recordings were mixed by Michael Musmanno (Lilys, Cadence Weapon) in New York City. The resulting album, "Anthems for Doomed Youth" was released on November 2, 2010.

Currently on the High Dialian roster: Trevor Anderson (vocals and guitar), Robbie MacArthur (lead guitar), George Donoso III (drums) and Eric Dougherty (keys).

Audio & Video production by Joe Lynch

"We The Sweetness hold these truths to be self-evident. That not all music is created equal, and sometimes, the whole of the sum is greater than its parts."

Spanning two countries, four very individual, promising music careers, and a multitude of genres & instruments, The Sweetness met somewhere in between. Somehow, solo singer-songwriter soul mates Aly Tadros (Austin, TX), Chloe Charles (Toronto, ON), Douglas Jay Boyd (Austin, TX) and double bassist Sam McLellan (Toronto, ON) managed to find each other, and gathered for a late night of impromptu jamming at the 23rd Annual Folk Alliance International Conference in Memphis, TN.

It began as a backing project for Aly and Chloe's solo projects. Fast friends from the previous years' Folk Alliance, the two had already toured Europe & the States together. A year later, plans were made to meet up in Memphis once again, this time with some favorite collaborators -- Douglas, himself a gifted singer-songwriter -- and Sam, an overactive freelancer & composer. A generously donated hotel room became a makeshift rehearsal space. Harmonies were added, parts extended & rearranged. After playing a number of breakthrough showcases at the conference, the foursome quickly gained buzz and excitement throughout the halls of the hotel.

The creature that is now known as The Sweetness was born in the most unlikely of places: the stairwell between the 17th & 19th floor of the Marriott Hotel in Memphis, TN. The rich four-part harmonies and heavy cajon-driven backbeats echoed and resonated and drew in the crowds of curious and excited spectators. After one particularly rousing number, a voice in the crowd shouted "Sweetness!" and a dream project was born.

The Sweetness went on to record their debut independent EP, "What's it like to be a sprinkler, I wonder?" with producer Gordon Raphael (The Strokes, Regina Spektor) one day before premiering at nine unofficial SXSW 2011 showcases in Austin, Texas. All the while, raising over $8,000 for their first fan-funded European Tour. This summer they depart on their debut North American Tour this fall with Award-winning documentary filmmaker Pascal Fetzer, commissioned by the FilmAkademie (Stuttgart, Germany). In addition to a number of venue and house shows, The Sweetness will be stopping at hospitals, ARC Centers, and Nursing Homes for volunteer performances around the country.
