Silent movie "The Artist" tops BAFTA nominations list
Far from a silent cry, French movie "The Artist" kicks off this year's BAFTA race with a total of 12 nominations.
Following its headtrick triumph at the Golden Globes from the weekend the black-and-white comedy is in the running for some of the top prizes, including best film.
Hot on its heels is Cold War spy movie "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" which received 11 nominations, including one for its leading actor.
SOUNDBITE: Daniel Radcliffe, actor, saying (English):
"I'd love Gary Oldman to get one for 'Tinker, Taylor', cause he's fantastic and it's a great film."
So one fan for sure but Oldman will have to outshine his fellow competitors including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Michael Fassbender and Jean Dujardin if he wants to get his hands on his first BAFTA best actor award.
Elsewhere in the Best Actress category, it's Meryl Streep who made it onto the shortlist for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."
She is up against Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn), Berenice Bejo (The Artist), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) and Viola Davis (The Help).
Overall competition this year seems more open than in 2011, says BAFTA chairman Tim Corrie.

"I think it's the diversity that is probably the most outstanding feature of what we've announced this morning. You know you're going from 'The Artist' to 'My Week with Marilyn' to 'Drive' to 'The Descendants' film and it's a braedth that we've not had for probably ten years I think there are 38 films covered this year as opposed to about to ten less last year. So -- it's a real mix and I would say if I can refer to it as a race that it's a really open one."
Other films hoping to make it first over the finish line on February 12 include Martin Scorsese's family adventure "Hugo", "My Week With Marilyn", "The Help" and Steven Spielberg's "War Horse."

New Hunger Games Photos -- Katniss Goes from the Reaping to Center Stage

I'm Joslyn Davis for ClevverTV with your sneak peeks at the many faces of Katniss Everdeen from Lionsgate's upcoming and highly anticipated film "The Hunger Games." A few new photos from the film have been making the rounds this week and we decided to check them out in order, to get a real feeling for her big screen transformation. The movie is likely to open with this version of Katniss -- just as we see her in the scene from the reaping, as she waits to find out which girl from District 12 will be called to fight to the death in the Panem Hunger Games. She is dressed very simply, with no make-up and her hair pulled back very simply. Next we see Katniss in what most think could become on her most iconic outfits from the entire franchise -- and that of course is her girl on fire costume. We see Katniss alongside Peeta, with her an incredibly intricate hair-style and dark, long-sleeved black costume. In the back-ground you can even spy their chariot. Next we're hoping to see these two actually in flames. Our last look at Katniss shows off her complete make-over and transformation as she stands arm raised, hand-in-hand with Caesar Flickerman. Quite the glamour girl here, Katniss looks gorgeous in her red dress with her hair styled in a classy chic up-do. This fashionable look brings the look at Katniss full-circle and we're looking forward to seeing all of the action really play out on the big screen when this movie hits theaters in March. Transplanted to Mars, a Civil War vet discovers a lush planet inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter a princess who is in desperate need of a savior.
JOhnatihan Crocker from total film liked the flick, he said, "A handsome new sci-fi adventure that feels rather familiar. Enjoyable enough while it lasts, John Carter is big on ambition and disappointingly short on action."
Dan JOlin from Empire agreed, he said, "Just about every sci-fi/fantasy/superhero adventure you ever loved is in here somewhere."
And finally, simon Reynolds from digital spy said, "When John Carter moves up the gears it's an accomplished blockbuster packed with pulse-racing action."

Ah, spring. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and flocks of beautiful people are pitching up on the red carpet outside a swanky hotel in London. It can only mean one thing: it's time for the Jameson Empire Awards 2012. The big winner of the night was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which took home Best Thriller, Best Actor (for Gary Oldman) and Best British Film. The Best Film of the year went to Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Part Two, which also won Best Director for David Yates, while Olivia Colman took Best Actress for her astonishing turn in Tyrannosaur.
The Awards were voted for by the Empire reader, and it's fair to say that they reflect a wide-ranging taste. Best Comedy went to homegrown British juggernaut The Inbetweeners, while Best Horror went to the deeply disturbing Kill List. The Americans got a look-in for Best Sci-Fi / Fantasy withThor (although even that has a British director in Kenneth Branagh).
Thor's wayward brother Loki, or at least alter-ego Tom Hiddleston, took Best Male Newcomer, while Best Female Newcomer went to Felicity Jones. The Art Of 3D Award went to The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn.
After that, it was on to the special awards for people we just think are awesome. Empire Hero was Michael Fassbender this year; Empire Inspiration went to Ron Howard ("for Apollo 13 alone, he deserves this!" as presenter Chris Hemsworth noted") and this year's Empire Icon was Tim Burton.

Downey Junior has commented about his characters evolution from previous films to the avengers by saying: "In Iron Man, which was an origin story, he was his own epiphany and redemption of sorts. Iron Man 2 is all about not being an island, dealing with legacy issues and making space for others... In The Avengers, he's throwing it down with the others".
A World War II veteran who was enhanced to the peak of human physicality by an experimental serum. Evans was cast as part of a deal to star in three Marvel films, in addition to The Avengers. Evans stated that Steve Rogers is much darker in The Avengers, explaining, "It's just about him trying to come to terms with the modern world. You've got to imagine, it's enough of a shock to accept the fact that you're in a completely different time, but everybody you know is dead. Everybody you cared about... About Thor's motivations Hemsworth has said, "I think [Thor's] motivation is much more of a personal one, in the sense that it's his brother that is stirring things up. Whereas everyone else, it's some bad guy who they've gotta take down. It's a different approach for me, or for Thor. He's constantly having to battle the greater good and what he should do vs. it's his little brother there... I've been frustrated with my brothers at times, or family, but I'm the only one who is allowed to be angry at them. There's a bit of that."
A highly trained spy working for the international peacekeeping organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. About the character and her relationship with Hawkeye, Johansson commented, "Our characters have a long history, they've fought together for a long time in a lot of battles in many different countries. We're the two members of this avenging group who are skilled warriors - we have no superpowers. Black Widow is definitely one of the team though. She's not in the cast simply to be a romantic foil or eye candy. She's there to fight, so I never felt like I was the only girl. We all have our various skills and it feels equal".
A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and master archer known in the comics as the "World's Greatest Marksman". About the role, Renner has said "When I saw Iron Man, I thought that was a really kick-ass approach to superheroes. Then they told me about this Hawkeye character, and I liked how he wasn't really a superhero; he's just a guy with a high skill set. I could connect to that.
Thor's adoptive brother and nemesis based on the deity of the same name. In regard to his character's evolution from the film Thor to the avengers Hiddleston has stated, "I think the Loki we see in The Avengers is further advanced. You have to ask yourself the question: how pleasant an experience is it disappearing into a wormhole that has been created by some kind of super nuclear explosion of his own making? So I think by the time Loki shows up in TheAvengers he's seen a few things." Hiddleston was at NYCC and shared how happy he was to work with his castmates on the film, check it out!
