Storm leaves behind record-low temps
demand for natural gas is the highest it's been in more than 40 years. and aps officials are spending the evening making sure their buildings don't get too cold for the pipes. our jeff maher was out checking up on how everyone is handling this arctic blast.. he's live downtown to show us what he found. i'm dressed this way for good reason. the temperature reading on the p- n-m building is . today we fanned out across the city to see how people, and different agencies are bracing for one of albuquerque's coldest nights of all time. "roscoe, roscoe stop, , he's freezing!" roscoe and his dog-friend have good reason to whine. the lowest temperatures albuquerque has seen in 20 years. "we've got them minute thumbnail 10:02 pm layers of clothing here, we've got the outer layer and the inner layer here, yeah she's shivering, wow!" the dogs and their owners are moving from hawaii to oklahoma. "it's freezing, it is really really cold here!" "my face hurts, it's so cold, this is my brand new jacket i got, it's pretty sweet " a-p-s officials are keeping a close watch on the schools -- "this gives us our temperatures" -- using computers. at atrisco heritage academy, workers are inspecting boilers and heaters, making sure it all stays on. "we can check the water temperatures and see what the boiler temperatures are, see what pumps are on" natural gas useage is at its peak. so much, that officials are asking people to help conserve. "and by that we mean small things, notching your thermostat down a couple of degrees or consider closing off a room that isn't frequently used if it doesn't need the heating"
