Vous en avez marre des biopics ? Après un J. Edgar qui nous aura laissé sur notre faim, La Dame de Fer (The Iron Lady) ne va pas inverser la tendance mais a le mérité de ne pas se contenter d'accumuler des instants de vie. Partant de l'Alzheimer grandissant de la Thatcher d'aujourd'hui, le film de Phyllida Lloyd (après Mamma Mia !, ça change) utilise la maladie de l'ancienne Premier Ministre pour raviver ses souvenirs à travers ses yeux, tout en se penchant sans complaisance sur la déchéance physique et mentale de cette femme d'exception. Parce que même si elle a régné d'une main de fer, pris des décisions contestables et fait sombrer son pays dans la révolte, Thatcher était avant tout une femme forte, un personnage fortement cinégénique qui a commencé par combattre les idées reçues et le machisme de la politique anglaise. Et la principale qualité du film, c'est bien l'interprétation extraordinaire de Meryl Streep, qui incarne son personnage avec un dévouement complet et un talent hors du commun. Tour-à-tour octogénaire et quarantenaire, elle se glisse dans la peau de Thatcher avec tellement d'assurance et d'élégance que la frontière entre réalité et fiction s'estompe jusqu'à devenir intangible. Streep est Thatcher et c'est proprement sidérant. A tel point qu'on excusera au film ses longueurs maladroites, d'autant qu'il fait dans l'ensemble preuve d'originalité dans un genre épuisé jusqu'à la corde et de subtilité dans son approche politique, complète et subtile.

Hollywood royalty arrives in Japan.

Actress Meryl Streep and "The Iron Lady" director Phyllida Lloyd travel to Tokyo for the film's premiere.

Key moments in former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's life are the subject of the film.

She was considered as a trailblazer when it comes to equal rights between the sexes in Britain.

Lloyd says a woman of Thatcher's status was needed to be played by a woman of similar status in today's world.

Just days after Streep snagged the Best Actress Oscar for her role and days before the one-year memorial of Japan's earthquake and tsunami, she was humbled to be in Japan.
