La France aimera t'elle Paul Wall ? C'est peu probable. C'est pourtant parmi ses beats lancinants et répétitifs et ses refrains bien souvent entêtants que se cache un des meilleurs freestylers du sud. Avant d'exploser avec Mike Jones dans le single Still tippin', Paul Wall a rappé sur de nombreuses mixtapes en compagnie de sa Color Changin Click et il a sorti deux albums avec son ex-partenaire Chamillionaire. Si on rajoute à ça son rôle de Dj (entre autres auprès de T.I), d'organisateur de soirées et de vendeur de dents en or, Paul Wall n'a jamais eu à justifier de sa couleur pour rapper comme un noir. Sa popularité n'a cessé de croître et The People's Champ marque un niveau jamais atteint de reconnaissance et de ventes. Sa certification platine en atteste.
Alors que les Geto Boys, Mr 3-2, Fat Pat, Big Pokey, Lil Keke ou la P.S.C formaient la première génération de rappeurs de Houston, le ?champion du peuple? appartient à la seconde qui bénéficiera certainement plus de l'explosion du son de H-Town. Quoi qu'il en soit son avènement tiendra bien à la tradition rap de sa ville. Paul Wall représente définitivement et fièrement pour Houston. Dans ses lyrics ?You don't know about Michael Watts! You don't know about Dj Screw! What'cha know about ?Maan hold up?, ?How they came down? and ?What it do? ?? D'autre part, contrairement à Slim Thug il a fait appel à un maximum de producteurs locaux : Salih William's (affilié à Wreckshop) et Mr Lee (plus proche de Rap A Lot records) mais surtout à son équipe habituelle : Pretty Todd & Calvin Earl. Seuls s'y ajoutent KLC (ex-producteur de Master P) et Kanye West pour le titre Drive slow, déjà présent sur l'album de ce dernier. Reste certainement à mentionner le plus important : le flow du maître de cérémonie, à l'aise et sûr, plein de frime et de jeu avec l'accent de ?là-bas? ?
Le résultat fait réellement penser à une tape screwed dans sa répétitivité et son entêtement. Les thèmes sont centrés sur l'égotrip, le bling bling et le quotidien des ghettos sudistes. En ressort malgré tout une indicible admiration pour ces parias de l'Amérique qui réussissent à faire rêver tout un continent par la fierté qu'ils ont ressorti de leur mode de vie et l'élégance insolente qu'ils ont à l'étaler. Et un incroyable respect pour ce blanc qui est chez lui dans ces quartiers et dans cette culture. ?That's what's up !?
The People's Champ reste difficile d'accès sauf à être très fan du nouveau sud. On l'écoutera de préférence sous codéine ou toute autre substance nocive. Si on a aimé le screwed and chopped de Michael Watts, le dernier Mike Jones ou certains T.I on s'y penchera avec intérêt. Dans le cas contraire, Houston reste un réservoir inépuisable de qualité et les pistes sont nombreuses, de Get ya mind correct le 1er Paul Wall & Chamillionaire au dernier Geto Boys en passant par toute la Screwed Up Click de 1999 à 2002 par exemple?
