Paul McCartney in US for major music award
Sir Paul McCartney has fielded a mix of questions at a press conference in Washington DC.
The former Beatle, who turns 68 later this month, is set to receive The Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in a special tribute concert in the East Room of the White House.
The prize celebrates McCartney's decades-long music that spans from his years with The Beatles to his current solo output.
The concert will feature a tribute by major stars, many of whom will perform the songs that propelled McCartney to legendary status in music around the world.
The line-up of stars include Stevie Wonder, Faith Hill, Jonas Brothers, Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, Corinne Bailey Rae and remarks by Jerry Seinfeld.
When asked about the BP oil spill, McCartney said it was a "disgrace" and "terrible".
But he did express his excitement and enthusiasm to perform in front of US President Barack Obama. He said: "I am a big fan. He's a great guy-- so, lay off him. He's doing great."
Named to honour the songwriting team of brothers George and Ira Gershwin, the prize "recognises musicians whose careers reflect a lifetime achievement in promoting song as a vehicle of artistic expression and cultural understanding," the library said in a statement.
The Gershwin Prize for Popular Songs was created by the Library of Congress to honour artists whose creative output transcends distinction between musical styles and idioms, bringing diverse listeners together and fostering mutual understanding and appreciation.

30th anniversary of John Lennon's murder
Wednesday, December 8, marks the 30th anniversary of the death of legendary singer-songwriter and The Beatles co-founder John Lennon.
Born in Liverpool in 1940, Lennon formed his first band, The Quarrymen, in 1957, which went on to become The Beatles the next year with the addition of Paul McCartney and George Harrison. The Beatles, which disbanded in 1970, are estimated to have sold more than a billion records worldwide.
Following his break-up with the Beatles, Lennon continued on with a successful solo career.
'Imagine', probably Lennon's most popular solo album, was released in 1971. Its title track, a utopian song by the same name, has been adopted by peace activists around the world as an unofficial anthem.
Lennon was married twice and had a son with each wife. He and Yoko Ono, his second wife, held "bed-ins" during their honeymoon in 1969, allowing the world press into their hotel room as a show of protest against the Vietnam War.
On December 8, 1980, Lennon was shot by disturbed fan, Mark David Chapman, in front of his New York apartment building, where he lived with Ono and their son Sean.
Chapman is serving a sentence of 20 years to life at Attica prison near Rochester, New York.

Fan takes Beatlemania to a whole new level
The first Beatles museum in Latin America has opened in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.
The museum, which was inaugurated on January 3, features the private collection of a man who could be the country's biggest Beatles fan.
Rodolfo Vazquez began collecting the band's memorabilia when he was ten years old and now owns more than 8,500 records, gadgets, puppets and games.
In 2001 Vazquez was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the owner of the largest collection of Beatles memorabilia in the world.
He decided to open the museum to share his collection with other Beatles aficionados.
"Because otherwise all of it would be closed into boxes and trunks without anyone being able to enjoy them," he said.
Vazquez claims that the museum has objects that are not present even in the famous Beatles museum in Liverpool, the birthplace of the Fab Four.
One of the most valuable items in the new museum is a John Lennon autograph that Vazquez purchased in 1981 in New York.
The collection also includes records, autographs, toys, puppets, original pictures, concert programmes and many other objects related to the band.
Vazquez says that his biggest ambition would be to have the chance to meet the two surviving band members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.
McCartney recently performed in Buenos Aires, but the two did not meet up. The Beatles never performed in Argentina.

OFF SESSION - Cocoon "Junk" (reprise de Paul McCartney)
Tony Bennett 'Duets' Tracklist Includes Gaga, Amy Winehouse
http://on.fb.me/loxDu6 - Facebook Fan Page! http://bit.ly/ClevverMusic - Click to Subscribe to ClevverMusic! Hey guys, and welcome back to ClevverMusic. I'm Bridget Daly in Hollywood. The tracklisting for Tony Bennett's Duets 2 album has just come out, and it's a powerhouse list of artists. The record includes everyone from popstars like Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood and Mariah Carey, to greats like Willie Nelson, Natalie Cole and Aretha Franklin. It's 17 tracks long, and includes a special duet with the late Amy Winehouse, with the proceeds of that particular single going to charity. As for the song selection, Bennett told USA Today in March, "We just tried to figure out what would feel natural for each artist." For example, he recorded a version of The Lady is a Tramp wth Lady Gaga that we simply cannot wait to hear, as we're sure they put their own spin on it. Bennett released his first 'Duets' album in 2006, teaming up with vets like Elton John, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and spent five consecutive weeks in the Top 10. Just a hunch, but we think this follow-up may do even better. Check out the full tracklisting below in our info box, and let us know which song you're most looking forward to. The album drops September 20th, so follow ClevverMusic on Twitter as a reminder to go out and buy it! Thanks for tuning in, see you guys next time.
Sir Paul McCartney ties the knot for the third time.
Sir Paul McCartney arrived at London's Westminster Registry Office on Sunday with his wife-to-be Nancy Shevell to tie the knot for the third time.
For his low-key ceremony, the Ex-Beatle chose the same venue where he married his first wife Linda.
Sir Paul married U.S. photographer Linda Eastman in 1969. She died of cancer in 1998, aged 56.
His second marriage to former model Heather Mills ended acrimoniously in 2008.
Fans, who'd been waiting outside the registry office for hours to catch a glimpse of the couple, gave Sir Paul's new wife the thumbs up:
SOUNDBITE Beatles fan and student from Italy Chiara Amato, saying (English):
"I really like her. I think she's really in love with him, so, this wedding, this marriage is going to be the last one. And I think they will be happy for the rest of their lives. I think so."
SOUNDBITE Susan and Jim Hughes, tourists from Canada, saying (English):
"Oh vibrant, the two of them seem to get along really well so I think this time is going to be very good for him.''
Amongst the many high-profile guests attending the ceremony was former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and his wife, model and actress Barbara Bach.
According to a British tabloid newspaper, Nancy Shevell's wedding dress was created by McCartney's daughter, fashion designer Stella McCartney.
The couple became engaged earlier this year after they began dating four years ago in the upmarket Hamptons area of Long Island, New York.
