'The Avengers' Captain America vs Thor - Fanboy Faceoff

Hey Fanboys, I'm Tatiana Carrier and this is Fanboy Faceoff, the show that pits your favorite comic book, sci-fi, fantasy and horror characters in a battle to the death...okay not to the death, but in a battle to be the ultimate Fanboy Superstar. Each week we'll pick two characters to faceoff and the ultimate winner will be chosen by you, our experts.

This week, we have a big showdown between two of Marvel's most popular characters - Captain America and Thor. It was only a mere second of footage, but one of the most memorable and anticipated moments revealed in The Avengers trailer was the promise of a battle between these two powerhouses. We know it will probably only be a minor spat as they will eventually come together as one to battle Loki and his army of Skrulls...Redacted...Or whatever they end up being. Anyway, it got us thinking. Who would come out on top in a battle between these two behemoths? Super soldier vs. god. Hammer vs shield.

This isn't the first time these two heroes have battled it out. Last year, they went head-to-head for summer box office supremacy with the release of their two films. It was a pretty close battle from the start with both films bringing in $65 million for their opening weekends. It was also pretty close for both film's US totals with Thor bringing in $181 million and Captain America managing a respectable $171 million. The figures for the worldwide box office weren't so close, as Thor brought in $446 million to Captain America's $366. It kind of makes sense though. He is Captain AMERICA after all and not Captain World. Another big win for Thor in this category is the fact that a sequel has already been set for November 15th, 2013. Despite rumors that a Captain America sequel is on the way, nothing yet has been confirmed.

So Thor wins the box office round, but what about The Avengers movie? It's been said that the film will be told through Captain America's perspective, so we're anticipating lots of screentime for Steve Rogers. On the other hand, the main villain The Avengers will be facing in this go-round will be Thor's brother, Loki. No doubt Thor will be getting lots of screentime as well in order to see how this sibling rivalry plays out. I think this round is too close to call and we'll have to wait to see how things play out on screen.
So how do we determine a winner? To the stats!

If looks alone were enough, Thor would be the clear winner, but he's also got the whole immortal god thing going for him. He's practically invulnerable, he possess superhuman speed, agility and reflexes and has stamina that allows him to battle for days on end. If he does manage to get wounded, he has the ability to regenerate and fix himself up faster than you can say, "nice ASSgardian!" Of course, one of his greatest assets is the mighty mystical hammer that packs a punch big enough to take down an army of Frost Giants. The hammer also helps to focus Thor's power to command the weather. As far as weaknesses, Thor really doesn't have any. His pride and ego lead him to being banished to Earth as a mortal, but he was able to overcome that in the first film, so we're assuming it won't be much of an issue in The Avengers. We'll just have to wait and see if he can play nice with the other superheroes.

Like Thor, Captain America possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility and endurance. He also has a handy weapon in his indestructible shield that he uses for both defense and offense as a projectile he can hurl at his enemies. Also like Thor, Captain America really has no weaknesses, but unlike Thor, he is human and therefore can be killed. He is however, one of the only humans ever to be able to wield Thor's mighty hammer, so if he actually got his hands on it, a hammer/shield combo could be just what he needs to take down the God of Thunder.

What do you think fanboys? The power is now in your hands. Will it be Thor or Captain America who triumphs in this Faceoff? Leave your comments below or tweet us your pick @ClevverMovies using the hashtag #CMFF. Until next time, I'm Tatiana Carrier signing off.

Mirror Mirror opens in theaters March 30th, 2012.

Cast: Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane, Mare Winningham, Sean Bean, Michael Lerner

Mirror Mirror is a spectacular reimagining of the classic fairy tale starring Oscar® winner Julia Roberts as the Queen, Lily Collins (The Blind Side) as Snow White, Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as Prince Alcott, Sean Bean ("The Game of Thrones", The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) as the King and Nathan Lane (The Lion King, The Birdcage) as the Queen's hapless and bungling servant, Brighton. An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a spirited adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over.

Visionary director Tarsem Singh (Immortals) rewrites fairy tale history as a wicked enchantress (Roberts) schemes and scrambles for control of a spirited orphan's (Collins) throne and the attention of a charming prince (Hammer). When Snow White's beauty wins the heart of the prince that she desperately pursues, the Queen banishes her to the forest, where a ravening man-eating beast hungrily awaits.

Rescued by a band of diminutive highway robbers, Snow White grows into an indomitable young woman determined to take back her realm from the treacherous Queen. With the support of her subjects, she roars into action in an epic battle that blends spectacle, magic and contemporary humor in Singh's signature, jaw-dropping visual style.

The Avengers is just around the corner and if it's been a while since you've seen the five films leading up to it and don't have ten hours to spare to watch them again, don't worry, we've got you covered. Here's a recap of how we got to The Avengers in just a few short mins. Ready? Let's go.

Back in World War 2, puny but brave Steve Rogers is recruited by the U.S. Government to become the first super soldier. With the help of inventor Howard Stark, Rogers is transformed into Captain America. He set out to stop the evil Red Skull, who is in possession of the tesseract, a device that would give him untold power. Captain America battles Red Skull who is seemingly killed by the tesseract before it falls into the ocean. Captain America crash lands the plane in the Arctic where he is frozen. Howard Stark is able to find the tesseract in the ocean, but is unable to find the Captain. Captain America later awakes to find himself in modern day New York where he meets S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Nick Fury who tells him he needs help saving the world.

Meanwhile, billionaire playboy defense contractor Tony Stark is showing off his company's latest creation in Afghanistan where he is taken hostage and forced to create a weapon for a terrorist group. Instead he creats a suit of iron that he uses to escape. Once back home, he announces Stark Industries will no longer make weapons despite the objections of the companies manager Obadiah Stane. Stark focuses on creating a new, more powerful suit. He uses the new suit to become Iron Man and save the world he helped to destroy. Stane sets out to kill Stark and creates his own suit. Stark manages to kill Stane and reveals to the world that he is in fact Iron Man. He later meets Nick Fury who tells him he isn't the only superhero in the world and that he wants to talk to him about the "Avengers Initiative".

Elsewhere, Dr. Bruce Banner is enlisted to work on an experiment that supposedly makes humans immune to gamma radiation, but the experiment is actually trying to recreate the super soldier program that created Captain America. The experiment fails and turns Banner into the Hulk. Banner flees and eventually learns to control the transformation into the Hulk.

Stark learns that his father was a founding member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and that his new personal assistant is actually an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. known as "Black Widow". Nick Fury tells him that Iron Man is a suitable candidate for the "Avengers Initiative", but Stark is not due to his volatile personality. Later, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson announces that he has discovered a large hammer in the desert.

The hammer turns out to be the mighty hammer of the god of thunder, Thor. Thor is exiled to Earth where he must learn humility in order to be able to wield the hammer again. While banished from Asgard, Thor's brother Loki discovers he is actually a Frost Giant. Thor proves himself worthy and returns to Asgard to stop Loki. The brother's fight and Loki falls into a portal, but later returns to Earth where he uses mind control to get into the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility where the tesseract is being held.

So there you have it. Everything you need to know to prepare you for The Avengers. Of course there's lots more to the stories of the five films, so if you haven't seen them or if it's been a while, be sure to pick them up. In the meantime, I'm Tatiana Carrier and be sure to subscribe to ClevverMovies to stay up-to-date on all The Avengers news.
