X-Men: First Class could be the sleeper hit of the summer. Why the critics are saying it'll be a stand out at the box office next. Hey moviegoers, Amanda Janner here for Clevver Movies in Hollywood. Theaters are flooded with comic book titles this summer, including Thor, Green Lantern and Captain America. But critics are buzzing about X-Men: First Class, saying it could be the X factor at the summer box office. Many overlooked the film since it's without stars Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Ian McKellen. What it does have is a fresh new cast, featuring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Jennifer Lawrence and Kevin Bacon. The film just opened, and by late Thursday, the reviews were in. And so far, so good, with critics echoing praise of Fox reviving a tired franchise. Wall Street Journal film critic Joe Morgenstern says the prequel, "draws new energy from supersmart casting" and is a "zestfully radical departure from the latter spawn of a sputtering franchise." The New York Times said the "X-Men film series has bounced back to life with its fifth installment, rescued with a straight injection of pop." Also a factor to consider is that First Class is not in 3D, making ticket prices more affordable -- if you call what you're local cinema charges these days to see a feature film affordable. Proving that 2D beats 3D at the box office, the 2D showings for both Kung Fu Panda 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides had stronger openings than the 3D versions. We've just learned that Glee queen Lea Michele is final negotiations to star in the movie, and word has it that hottie Zac Efron is likely to be joining her. Zac was originally supposed to play the role that Taylor Lautner ultimately took on. Zac Efron might have to make some room in his trailer to hang out with another guy we love because according to Variety, Wizards star Jake T. Austin just signed on to join the New Year's Eve cast. As you likely already know, this movie will be a sort of follow-up to last year's Valentine's Day and will follow "intertwining stories of characters trying to navigate their way through romance on the last night of the year." Jake joins a star-studded cast that already includes big-time vets like Halle Berry, Robert De Niro and Sarah Jessica Parker. There aren't many deets about his part as of yet, although our pals over at JustJaredJr posted that they hear his character will be colorful. And since we know this is a movie about romance, we're just dying to find out who Jake will be cozying up to.
