Mojo Stone are like a modern day Fleetwood Mac without the drama. Unapologetic, unexpected, and soulful, Mojo Stone's first E.P. entitled "Hatchet" exhibits the birth of a new musical talent that straddles both old and new schools.
"We don't desire to be a one-genre kind of band" lead vocalist Meadors says of the group, "we want to capture the lights and the darks of the music we create, and allow each song to shape its own mood."
And moodiness is exactly what you get from Mojo Stone. Touching on tender harmonies reminiscent of Fleet Foxes in tracks such as "Barefoot Boy", then dipping into swampy, dark territory with the last track of their E.P, "Gritty Love Blues", this band touches on everything from classic rock n' roll, to rockabilly, to folk.
Since its inception, the group has gone from playing tiny bar gigs and open mics across LA to managing their own national tour in the early summer of 2011. Expect Mojo Stone to make the rounds again soon; they're itching to go already. In the meantime, Mojo will be playing shows in California, selling CDs at shows and promoting "Hatchet" through Facebook and iTunes.

In the spring of 2006 I took off for Atlanta, GA to live with some great friends and to attempt really for the first time in my life to learn about what it meant to live communally. It was this time in Atlanta though that would prove to be incredibly impactful for me as a musician. If it wasn't sitting around the house drinking beer and listening to Levon Helm, Hank Williams, and Bob Dylan on Vinyl, it was driving half way across the country with friends to hear Mason Jennings or to stay with friends in Kentucky who would introduce me to a rather unknown Album (at the time) called "For Emma, Forever Ago".
Many more artists other than those mentioned above helped shape my music during this time, some I believe to be noteworthy being Griffin House, The Swell Season, Bowerbirds, Elvis Perkins, Damien Jurado, fleet foxes, and Delta Spirit. But perhaps none have been more influential to me as a songwriter than the former lead singer of Caedmons Call, now solo artist Derek Webb. Its been his ability to boldly and passionately convey the truth of the gospel and address tough issues with humility and love that has been inspirational and guiding to me as a musician, by speaking not only to the church but in taverns and bars across America.
I now currently live in Tampa, FL, where for 2 and a half years I have continued the journey of finding out what it means to follow Jesus. At 24 yrs old, if I've been able to gather anything of significance at all up to this point, it's that my identity in Christ is in itself my identity with the suffering and the marginalized of this world. The idea that I could use my passion and love for music as a platform to share truth and identify with people in a communal, authentic, loving way is quite a humbling one, and I am thankful that I've been given that opportunity at least for the time being. I heard once that theres been a beautiful, rhythmic melody playing since the beginning of the world, and I really believe that. My goal is to find that tune and harmonize with it. :) rock.

From the little known South African town of Bethlehem comes a singer-songwriter whose debut record is so strikingly of the times it'll fast be soundtracking the lives of individuals across the globe.
Titled Truth and Recession, the 13-track record introduces Brendon Shields' music to a broader public for the first time -- close to a year after his songs earned him a publishing deal with Sony/ATV South Africa.
Shield's exquisitely rendered tales of love and survival have also seen him become the first signing to MIA Records, the Joburg-based distributor of several key international indie labels including Sub Pop, New West Records and Thrill Jockey. This places Shields in the company of the likes of Steve Earle, Fleet Foxes, and Low, his tender, frequently melancholic, vignettes of life lived in "pre-recession shoes" fitting in comfortably with these kind-of artists.
The arrival of Truth and Recession is being preceded by the release of the record's first single, "Rockstardom" -- a bleak yet deeply heartfelt song about hope in impossible times. "But can I you this song about our future/maybe your little heart will hurt a little less/and if I promise you I'm going to be a rockstar/Babe this situation is a mess/when rockstardom is the only option left," Shields sings in his carefully modulated voice that sits atop the simplest of music arrangements.
Indeed, its Shield's lyrics that are his most potent selling point, and his ability to describe the heartbreak of love going south or the prospect of summer lovin' just around a pretty dark corner places him amongst the best lyricists working in music today.
What's also striking about Shields' music is how fully-formed it comes, with the sense that there is little distance between the songs first being written and what results in the studio.
