Ein Mann, eine Frau, zwei Kinder: eine Familie. Thomas (Devid Striesow) ist Musiker, Marie (Nina Hoss) war ebenfalls Musikerin, bevor die Kinder kamen. Eines Morgens fährt Thomas zur Arbeit und vergisst seine Geige zuhause. Marie radelt ihm mit dem Geigenkasten nach. Und stellt fest: Nicht weit entfernt, in einem anderen Haus, hat Thomas noch eine andere Familie, noch eine Frau, noch einen Sohn. Maries Welt bricht zusammen. Sie versucht, Thomas zur Rede zu stellen und verfolgt ihn bis zu seinem nächtlichen Konzert bei einem Kostümball auf einem maroden Schloss. Langsam kommt sie hinter das Geheimnis ihres Mannes. Und langsam zerfällt dabei ihr bisheriges Leben, während ein Drang nach Befreiung erwacht...
