But in other parts of China the winter weather is being welcomed. China's first ever Snow Polo World Cup was held on Saturday, with 12 international teams battling it out on the field. The ancient sport is seeing a comeback in China after almost 1,000 years.

China's first ever Snow Polo World Cup kicked off in the country's largest polo facility on Saturday, with 12 top international teams attracting a crowd of new polo enthusiasts.

The tournament was held at the Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club in Tianjin, an industrial port city an hour and a half by car from Beijing.

The 12 teams, all members of the Federation of International Polo, fall into a 14-16 handicap range, which organizers say makes the tournament one of the most competitive in the world.

Three matches?Hong Kong/China versus England, Argentina versus South Africa, and India versus the United States?were held after the opening parade on Sunday.

Teams from Australia, Brazil, Chile, France, Italy and New Zealand will also be competing to become the first winners of the inaugural Snow Polo World Cup.

Though it was once popular with China's upper classes during the Tang dynasty over 1,000 years ago, the "sport of kings" died out almost entirely in China until a recent surge of interest in foreign sports became perceived as high class.

[Qin Yumei, Polo Fan]:
"Personally, I don't know a lot about polo, but I think that's the same for everyone in the Chinese audience. But through watching a couple of matches today, I can see how polo?especially snow polo?could easily appeal to people across the country and in the world."

Tianjin's polo club features two standard-sized polo fields, stabling for 157 horses and a riding school.

Take note. This is not just a fan base. This is a movement, and when the overnight success stories find that their fifteen minutes are up and the flavor of the month fans have moved on, Current Swell will continue recording and performing to legions of grass-roots aficionados that aren't going anywhere anytime soon. While other bands might sport the label "indie", this is a band that has made their mark independently in the truest sense. This music is listener supported.?

This is the opposite of an overnight success. In keeping with a modern world there is no story of a massive radio hit. No magic record contract signed to a major label to bring the music to the masses, no shout outs from friends in the biz, none of that. That's not to say that Current Swell has been bereft of accomplishments, but sometimes a band flies under the radar until it can no longer be ignored.

Case in point. Current Swell began with humble roots, as friends playing in backyards, at parties, on couches, on beaches, and in any situation that allowed for guitars to be strummed casually. Finding their Kafka moment, they found themselves on stages playing to packed clubs, in vans, planes, at major festivals, and all over the world, headlining concerts and making music for new and old fans. Touring Canada, Australia and the USA, and playing shows with acts like Xavier Rudd, Bedouin Soundclash, K-OS, K'Naan, Ron Sexsmith and even the Beach Boys, opened them up to new and enthusiastic audiences. Appearances at Ottawa Bluesfest, the 2010 Olympics, Junofest, Rifflandia, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues, and headlining Canada Day for 40,000 people at the BC Legislature continued their momentum. But this did not happen overnight.

In the strangest of places. No one was more surprised than the band when their lo-fi release "So I Say" became an underground classic among young people from all corners of the world. Scott Stanton of Current Swell remembers a story of when a friend on a surf trip in Bali, Indonesia, found a copy of the debut album in a hostel. Another story tells of the band stumbling across legions of web recordings made by Brazilian fans covering Swell songs, and even one group of keen fans doing their own version of the entire "Young and Able" video, with the scenes being re-shot in Brazil rather than Canada.

And so it goes. "Trust Us Now" was supported by word of mouth, relentless touring and a viral online fan base. The band's first release with national distribution, "Protect Your Own", was also the first to show up on industry radar, with national radio-play and a popular music video. By this point the band had become a festival mainstay, with artistic directors recognizing both the bands rampant fan base and the fervor they created with performances. Tours through the U.S. and sold out ticketed shows confirmed the bands suspicions that word had spread more than they knew.

Long Time Ago. The band began the long process of producing their latest LP "Long Time Ago" with the feeling that something special was going on. With a renewed work ethic, they focused intensely on songwriting and execution and set their standards high, recording and re-recording songs until they felt each track had been realized to its fullest. This is not a band looking to adapt to a radio format or searching for the catchiest hook, this is about respecting the process and giving the songs and music what they need. Again, this is a modern world. Is there any other way? And so...

In the U.K., Avengers debuted to $24.7 million, the biggest opening for a superhero title, as well as Disney's biggest three-day opening. The 3D movie grossed $19.7 million in Australia, the second-highest opening ever. CRAYYY-ZEEE!!!!

The Avengers made a big splash at the box office this weekend and even managed to destroy a record held by a certain boy wizard and we have the details!

After a successful international opening a week before, The Avengers was finally unleashed upon American audiences and it SMASHED the competition. Despite not being able to break the midnight screening record and most of the industry prediction an opening in the $160 million dollar range, The Avengers smoked Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2's previous $169 million opening weekend record by taking in an earth shattering $200.3 million over 3 days.

Not only did the film become the biggest opening ever in the U.S., but also broke records in several other markets, including Mexico, Brazil, Hong Kong and New Zealand. The global take for the Marvel team-up is estimated at $641.8 million in just 12 days in release. It's global take has already surpassed the lifetime global box office of 2010's Iron Man 2.

The Avengers brought in $80.5 million on Friday, becoming the 2nd highest single day take of all time behind Harry Potter and $69.7 million on Saturday, a record for that day. Fans and critics alike have embraced the film with audiences rating it a rare A+ Cinemascore and it earned a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

With these kinds of numbers, a sequel is guaranteed, it's just a question of how soon. The earliest they most likely will be able to release one is in 2015, though an as yet announced secret movie is set for May 16th, 2014. The next Avenger to hit the big screen with be Iron Man in the third installment of the hit series on May 3rd next year followed by Thor 2 on November 15th and Captain America 2 on April 4th, 2014.

So what did you think of The Avengers and how many times do you plan on seeing it? Let us know in the comment section and be sure to subscribe to ClevverMovies to stay up to date on all your movie news. I'm Misty Kingma, thanks for watching!
