Fans welcome Houston's body home
Even in death, Whitney Houston gets a star's welcome.

Fans gather outside this New Jersey funeral home as a hearse arrives carrying the pop star's body back to her home town of Newark.

The 48-year-old icon died Saturday in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel room.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SHAUN VAUGHAN, A NEWARK RESIDENT WHO SAYS HE ATTENDS THE NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH, SAYING:

"Whitney was considered family to me, and my family. I love her, I'm going to miss her. The last time we saw each other was in church and it was a beautiful Easter Sunday, which she gave God the glory. So I came out here to really see all the people so that I can go back to New Hope and say that our girl was loved."

As a girl, Houston sang in the choir at New Hope Baptist Church. But her rise to stardom and vocal prowess were later marred by drug and alcohol abuse.

One fan had words for Houston's 18-year-old daughter with ex-husband Bobby Brown.

"Bobbi Kristina, your mother loves you. Keep your head up, be strong. You can get through this. Your mother is gone mentally, physically, but not spiritually.

The cause of Houston's death is still being investigated.

Services are expected at the Whigham funeral home later in the week.

Whitney Houston funeral set for Saturday

Whitney Houston will be laid to rest at a private funeral on Saturday, one week after she was found dead in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton.

The invitation-only ceremony ? which is said to include a performance by her godmother, legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin ? will be held at New Hope Baptist Church in Houston's hometown of Newark, New Jersey. Though the general public are not allowed to attend, they will be able to watch live on the Internet thanks to an Associated Press news feed.

After reports that he had been banned by family, Houston's troubled ex-husband Bobby Brown is said to be back on the guest list. The two divorced in 2007, ending a 15-year marriage marred by abuse and drug addiction.

Houston's music touched her fans deeply, and there has been an overwhelming outpouring of grief and admiration, despite her personal demons. A makeshift memorial has been erected outside New Hope, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has declared that all flags in the state be flown at half-staff on Saturday.

Even Osama Bin Laden was a fan of Houston's. A former mistress of the assassinated terrorist mastermind alleges in a new book that Bin Laden pined for the singer and fantasized about murdering Bobby Brown in order to claim Houston as his own.
